What is Nursing in Today’s World

In the words of Florence Nightingale:

“Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires as exclusive a devotion, as hard a preparation as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts; I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts.”

In today’s world, many people do not respect nurses and the work that they do.  There are many types of nurses in different fields.  I personally have had the privilege of working as a nurse in medical-surgical units, labor and delivery, legal nursing,  home care, case management, workman’s comp, and field nursing.  The experiences that I gained in working in all of these different areas of  nursing make me who I am today.

Through out the past month, these same nurses that did not receive any gratitude have now started to receive recognition, some negative and some positive.  Nursing as we know it has changed many lives.  We have had to adapt to the way that we reach out to our patients for their protection and ours through telehealth nursing.  For many patients, this has been a great thing because they can still talk with their nurse and their doctor.  I see clients in their home and doctor’s offices, but during the COVID-19 shelter in, I have had to reach out by telehealth to my clients in order to continue to provide the services that they need.

Many people have been so scared that they are losing sleep and feeling stress due to not working and how are they going to pay their bills.  Then there are the nurses that work frontline in the hospitals and doctor’s offices and the nurses that now have to see patients through telehealth measures.  One would think that those of us that have jobs still amidst this pandemic would be grateful and kind, but instead, for some people, it is causing stress and anxiety as a result of undisclosed fear.

Fear’s acronym that has been shared is false evidence appearing real.  In this case, though it is fear of the unknown.  Will there be work, will I get infected? Will my family be okay?  These are all questions that go through people’s minds.  What can we do as nurses?  Pray and ask God for that peace to be the light in the midst of darkness.  Second, understand that we can’t change the world and those that are in it; but we can change the way we look at it and how we handle circumstances.

A friend paid me the greatest compliment the other day, he said “Rosie Moore you followed The Great Physician! Bringing healing and hope to those in despair.  keep up the good work.  There is a crown waiting for you!”  So today know that every type of nurse is important whether in the frontline or via telehealth.  When COVID-19 is over, never forget what our country went through and the work that nurses and other healthcare workers did.


Theoretical Models and Research

There are several theorists that can fit the neonatal population, but the one that I am selecting today is Florence Nightingale.  Although she is one of the oldest theorists, her model can still be applied to everyday nursing.  All patients are prone to getting an infection; however, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is particularly at risk.  Florence Nightingale gave us some principles that would help many of our patients.  She believed in keeping the environment clean, therefore observing good infection control.  She also believed in keeping the patient in the best condition and letting nature take its course or “God.” So Florence did have a spiritual connection which made her sensitive to cultural awareness of others (DeNisco & Barker, 2013).

I believe Florence Nightingale’s research model is quantitative.  She believed that if an environment was kept clean, that the patient would not develop infections.  She believed that nurses needed to wash their hands frequently.  Back in that era, this was not a highly common practice.  Bringing it to this generation, looking at the NICU, it makes sense.  The NICU believes in keeping a sterile environment allowing only certain visitors to see the babies and frequent hand washing and scrubbing for the staff and the parents.  When parents are sick, they are asked not to come to the NICU, if a baby is sick, the parents are asked to wear a mask, gown, and even wear gloves, depending on the baby’s condition. This is an example of keeping the environment free of infections so as not to spread it to the babies (Alligood, 2010).

Why is Leadership Important to Nursing

Nurses are not often recognized for their professional expertise.  I know that when Florence Nightingale started the very first school of nursing her goal was to change how people viewed nurses by educating the nurses (DeNisco & Barker, 2013).


Leadership is important to nursing because without it, there is not going to be anyone to educate new nurses.  The baby boomers are retiring and we will need new teachers that are prepared to teach new nursing students as well as students at the graduate level.  Recent studies show that nurses that are prepared with their bachelor’s in nursing experienced less pressure ulcers, deep vein thrombosis and hospital acquired infections in their patients. It was noted that although an associate’s degree is less costly and provides the care needed to a patient; by the year 2020 the goals are 80% of nurses will have their BSN and doubling for nurses with their doctorate.



There are organizations that provide nurses of higher education grants to conduct research and be able to make difference.  In order for these research projects to be done, it is required that the nurse be able to write a solid proposal request for the grant.  This may require the skill of a grant writer, but the nurse must be knowledgeable in the project and what it entails in order to help the grant writer correctly write the grant to fund the project that the nurse wants to do (Laden, 2013).

In Orlando, we have the Florida Nurses Association.  It is an organization that will support nurses from the student level through the advanced level.  The organization is involved in many things especially any that are legislative where a nurse wants to make a difference.  The Florida Nurse’s Association has subgroups called Special Interest Groups ( Sigs), these groups will benefit the members because they are formed to specialize in something that a particular group wants to see changed.  For example there is a group called Nurse Entrepreneur Special Interest Group, this groups supports nurses that have an entrepreneur business that they want to start or have started.  If there is a group that you want to start for a particular interest  that you have and it is not a group already listed here, then after speaking with leadership in the group, if they approve it, then you could start it.  The group is responsible for having ten members in it in order for the group to work. A master’s and beyond prepared nurse would be able to conduct research needed for any new programs that need to be implemented.
